High Desert Water Wise Landscaping

Certain plants do well in the dry extreme climates of our desert than others.  In addition, some plants use more water than others.  That is why the District is involved in educating the public on water wise landscaping techniques and plant choices - to save water and beautify our landscapes.

Hi-Desert Water District in partnership with the Alliance for Water Awareness and Conservation and other local water districts to host High Desert Water-Wise Landscaping classes taught be Robin Kobaly of the SummerTree Institute and Mike Branning with Unique Nursery.  This partnership has created a high quality education program focused on best landscape practices, plant selection, irrigation and maintenance for our desert climate.  The focus is on the use of Native Plants and other desert adaptive plants that thrive in the high desert requiring very little water.

We believe that our customers can enjoy a beautiful landscape that is also appropriate for our desert, conserving our precious water resources.

Water Use Restrictions in Landscaping

1.  Water no more than three (3) days a week.

2.  Restrict you watering hours May 1 to September 30 tobefore 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m., to avoid excess evaporation loss.  It is also much better for the plants.

State Landscape Ordinance - Effective January 1, 2010.

Currently, District staff is working to develop a local ordinance to take the place of the State Landscape Ordinance.  Until such time as a local ordinance is adopted and in effect, the State Landscape Ordinance is in effective for both the Town of Yucca Valley and the County of San Bernardino's unincorporated areas.  For more information visit http://www.water.ca.gov/wateruseefficiency/landscapeordinance/.
