Proper Disposal of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs)
Much is being discovered about the impact of pharmaceutical waste and the impact on water quality throughout the country. The issue of what to do with unused prescription drugs can be confusing due to conflicting advice. Original recommendations were developed with the concern of discarded medications getting into the wrong hands, especially small children. So the question remains what should you do with your unwanted medication, prescriptions and personal care products? One thing is certain from a water quality perspective – DO NOT FLUSH THEM.
Proper waste disposal is important to protect you, your family, our environment and our water supplies. Here are some tips for disposing of common household and commercial wastes.

Always read the labels for special instructions on how to dispose of all products.

Recycle everything you can.

For solid medications, such as pills or capsules: add water and seal the contain with duct tape and through in the trash.

Liquid medications can be mixed with salt, flour, charcoal, coffee and duct taped I the original container to prevent leaks.

Never flush pharmaceuticals or other medicines, instead take them to the Household Waste Collection Center.
