Water Quality
The water supplied to our customers is primarily derived from the Warren Valley Groundwater Basin. Once the water is pumped from the basin, it must meet stringent health standards before the water is considered drinkable. In 1974 our government established the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, which was amended in 1986. The purpose of this Act was to ensure the quality of our water supplies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards and monitoring requirements for every water utility. In the State of California, the Department of Health Services acts as the enforcement agency.
In California, there are over 70 standards for compounds which may be found in the water. This number will probably increase in the future. The Safe Drinking Water Act divides these standards into two categories: Primary and Secondary. Primary standards govern the substances which may be immediately harmful or affect your health if consumed during a long period of time. Secondary standards govern the aesthetic qualities of the water such as taste, odor, clarity and mineral content.
Hi-Desert Water District tests its water at each well and at numerous locations throughout the distribution system on a regular basis. Additionally tests are conducted in the event a well or any portion of a main line is repaired. Samples are collected by a certified District employee and analyzed by an independent state certified laboratory. The results of each test are then forwarded to both the District and the Department of Health Services for examination. With these rigorous testing procedures, the public is assured that the water delivered to their home is safe and healthful. Below are past annual water quality reports mailed to our customers:
