1 Billion Gallons of Wastewater Treated

The Hi-Desert Water District proudly announces a major milestone in the success of its Centralized Wastewater Treatment Plant: over 1 billion gallons of wastewater have been treated since the facility began operations. This remarkable achievement marks a significant chapter in the Town of Yucca Valley’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable infrastructure.

The Centralized Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was completed as part of a historic initiative to protect the region’s groundwater and replace outdated septic systems, has been operating continuously since its launch. Under the expert leadership of Matt Mayo, Chief Plant Operator, the facility has exceeded expectations in both performance and maintenance.

“Treating over a billion gallons of wastewater is not just a number—it’s a testament to the dedication of our entire team and the value this facility brings to our community,” said Mayo. “Our staff has worked tirelessly, operating the plant 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring it remains one of the cleanest, most well-maintained facilities in the region.”

The plant plays a critical role in protecting the desert environment by reducing nitrate contamination and helping preserve the area’s limited water resources. Its state-of-the-art design and operations support high efficiency, reliability, and safety standards, making it a cornerstone of the District’s long-term sustainability efforts.

Hi-Desert Water District extends its gratitude to the entire operations team, local partners, and the Yucca Valley community for supporting this essential work. As the plant continues to serve the area for decades to come, the District remains committed to excellence in wastewater treatment and environmental protection.

PHASE 2 SEWER PROJECT UPDATE

We are getting closer to beginning construction on the next phase of the sewer collection system. The first neighborhood that will see construction will be part of Country Club, sometime this summer. The State Revolving Fund Department of Finance is working on the final budget approval to allow us to issue the Notice to Proceed (NTP) to our contractor Sukut Construction. We are also working closely with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on the western Joshua tree permit(s) needed. The Town of Yucca Valley has also been an outstanding partner as we finalize the preconstruction activities.

If you live in the Country Club neighborhood, you may want to mark your calendar to attend an Open House on May 14th in our boardroom at our office at 55439 29 Palms Highway and Inca Trail. Stop by between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to talk to our project team about the expected timelines, construction impacts, and private property connection requirements.

Also, be sure to sign up for project updates via email and follow us on Facebook, NextDoor, Instagram or X for updates. Property owners in the Country Club area will get a letter to coordinate their private property lateral location. For updated information visit www.hdwd.com/phase2sewer

In May, crews will be moving to the Yucca Mesa area north of Aberdeen between Warren Vista and Avalon to install new pipeline to replace the old pipes.

Pipeline Upgrades begin on Mesa

Beginning May 2025, construction crews will begin work in the neighborhood north of Aberdeen Ave. between Warren Vista & Avalon Ave. This phase will continue through October 2025.

What to expect during construction:

  •  Traffic control & flaggers will be present — please drive slowly through work zones
  • Expect open trenches, large equipment, dust & noise
  • Temporary water service disruptions may occur (we’ll notify you in advance)
  • Driveway access may be temporarily affected
  • Streets will be fully restored after pipeline installation

Led by Ryan Abell, our in-house teams take pride in their work and help the District save big by doing the job themselves — efficiently, respectfully, and with quality in mind.

As GM Tony Culver says: “Keeping this work in-house delivers the highest value at the lowest cost to our customers.”

Thanks to our residents for your patience as we continue improving Yucca Valley’s water infrastructure — for today and for the future!

🚫 Your Toilet (and Sink!) Are NOT Trash Cans! 🚽🚫

Help protect our pipes and our planet — only flush the 3 Ps: Pee, Poo, and (toilet) Paper.

❌ Do NOT flush or pour down the drain:

  • “Flushable” wipes (they’re not flushable)
  • Q-tips
  • Tampons & pads
  • Dental floss
  • Trash
  • Grease, oil, or food scraps

💥 Grease and food harden in pipes and cause costly blockages, backups, and environmental damage.

👉 Dispose of wipes, hygiene products, and trash in the garbage.

👉 Pour grease, oils, and food waste into a sealed container and toss it in the trash — never the sink.

💧Let’s keep our wastewater system flowing smoothly.

Do your part — Think Before You Flush (and Pour)!
